Why BISHTA

BISHTA (more formally known as the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) was set up following a number of deaths from Legionnaires’ disease in the late 1990’s in the Netherlands and then also in Belgium of a number of people attending a flower show, where there was a hot tub on display with water in it, but no sanitiser in the water.

BISHTA’s original aim was to “Promote Safe Spa Water” to prevent any possible repeat of the deaths and hospital admissions for people with Legionnaire’s disease BISHTA has expanded its aim to “Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards”, although promoting safe spa water will always remains a cornerstone of what the Trade Association stands for.
